The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a listed church building in Kirchhundem , a municipality in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The church in 1261 was first documented as a parish , she was from the mother parish Wormbach abgepfarrt . The neo-Gothic hall church was built by the contractor Anton Sunder-Plassmann from Förde (today: Grevenbrück ) according to the plans of the architect Joseph Buchkremer from 1915 to 1917. There are preserved parts of the predecessor building, which has been extended several times. The two west bays and the basement of the square west tower, which only enclose a spiral staircase, date from the Romanesque period. The groin vaulted west yoke of the south aisle is two-story.

Furnishing

Old organ
  • The organ was built by Peter Heinrich Varenholt from 1701 to 1702. The sculptural work of the prospectus comes from Johann Sasse from Attendorn . Substantial changes were made in 1814 by Johann Rötzel. You can find more information about the organ here
  • A second organ was installed in 1940 by the Anton Feith company from Paderborn, it corresponded to the sound ideal of the late romantic era
  • A Renaissance choir stalls with flat carvings are marked 1590
  • A crucifix from the second half of the 15th century
  • St. Peter and St. Paul made of wood, created around 1700
  • Half of a double Madonna with putti from the beginning of the 18th century
  • A renaissance ciborium made of silver, gilded. It was made at the end of the 16th century.

The church still has a "St. Peter's Bell", which was commissioned by the pastor Rötger Strick at the beginning of the 16th century and consecrated in 1513. The bronze bell bears the inscription "I am called Peter, when I call, come to hand"; it survived the Second World War . Three other bronze bells in the church, which were melted down for war purposes in 1942, were replaced in March 1951 by steel bells with bronze clappers. It was possible to harmonize the sound of the steel bells with the sound of the now 500 year old bronze bell. The “old bell” is the souvenir of the parish of St. Peter and Paul from the times of the Electorate of Cologne .
