St. Petronilla is a Catholic parish church in Münster-Handorf .

Building history

The first church that was dedicated to St. Petronilla was built in Handorf around 1030. It was a small wooden church donated by a countess from the Franconian tribe .

After the parish of St. Petronilla was established in 1282, the wooden church was replaced by a new church building around 1300.

The current church building was completed around 1700. The church tower was added in 1864/65. The tower was designed in the Gothic style. In 1913 the church was extended by a transept and received a new choir and a new sacristy house.

In 1942 the church tower had to be removed up to the height of the roof ridge on the orders of the Luftgau commander; There was a military airfield nearby, and the spire obstructed the approach to the airfield.

In the years 1976–1977 the church was fundamentally renewed and expanded. In particular, the north transept was extended and provided with a large gallery, and the tower was rebuilt.

Since 2008 a crib path has started at the church , which leads to the Church of St. Maria Himmelfahrt, also called Dyckburg Church . In 2017, 72 cribs were installed in Handorf near the parish church 118, along the way to Dyckburg. An advent calendar is attached to the east wall of the church during the Christmas season.

Furnishing

The oldest piece of furniture is a Romanesque font, which was probably made in the 13th century. The cylindrically shaped baptismal font is made of Baumberger sandstone . The base that was presumably originally present is missing.

On the east wall in the choir hangs a large oil painting that has been in the community's possession since 1886. The artist is unknown. The painting was probably painted before 1850. The crucifixion group (Mary, Jesus, John and at the foot of the cross beam Mary from Magdala) is shown in the foreground, and in the center the crucified in the 3-nail type on the cross.

organ

An organ by the organ builder Romanus Seifert (Kevelaer) has been on the gallery in the north transept since 1980 . The slider chests -instrument has 16 registers on two manuals and pedal. The key actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electrical.

Trivia

There is a narrow passage between the church and the rectory, in which a sign has forbidden the passage for cyclists since 1991 . This sign, which provided an exception for Clara Westermann (* 1908, † 2004) for the long-time sexton of the church, became an internet phenomenon : “Cyclists get off! except. Frau Westermann ”can be read there. Ruppe Koselleck has also been responsible for spreading the message since 2016 : The Munster artist incorporated the sign into his “Fundstücke” series and spread the motif via postcards and stickers .
