The Sankt Petrus Church is the Catholic church in Kalbe , a town in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish “St. Hildegard ”based in Gardelegen , in the Stendal deanery of the Magdeburg diocese . The church, named after St. Simon Petrus , is located at Rathausstraße 13 and can be reached from the east promenade via a bridge over the Milde .

The Reformation was introduced in Calbe an der Milde around 1541 , and the then 450 inhabitants and the church became Evangelical Lutheran .

In 1852 Salzwedel became the seat of a missionary vicariate, which Calbe also belonged to. In 1920 the mission vicarie Salzwedel was raised to a parish, at that time 21 Catholics were already living in Calbe. In 1933, a census showed that of Calbe's 2007 residents, 56 were Catholic. Around 1938 a room in a residential building at Rathausstrasse 21, not far from today's church, was rented and expanded into a chapel . On May 1, 1939, Beetzendorf became the seat of a parish vicarie , which from then on also included Calbe.

As a result of the Second World War , more Catholics settled in Calbe; they were refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . In November 1946 the Calbe Curate was founded under the patronage of St. Hedwig von Andechs . The first curate was Josef Busche, who was followed by Alois Moritz in 1948 and Ferdinand Sprenger in 1951.

In 1952, the town of Calbe an der Milde was renamed "Kalbe" to distinguish it from Calbe (Saale) . The chapel “St. Hedwig ”was used until the St. Petrus Church was built, after which a consumer grocery store was operated in its place .

In 1963 the parishioners built the Church of St. Peter with great personal contribution, and it was consecrated on December 22nd, 1963 . At that time, Theobald Hillmann (1931–2010) had been the Kuratus of Kalbe since 1957. His long-term successor was Heinrich Koch (1928–2009) from 1966. Heinrich Koch retired at the end of 2000, but remained active in Kalbe until 2005. This brought Kalbe back to the parish of Salzwedel. As of September 1, 2006, the church had Ludwig Rother, the last local priest , and Kalbe was a curate for the parish of St. Michael in Gardelegen.

On November 1, 2007, the parishes of Gardelegen and Oebisfelde , the Kuratien Kalbe and Mieste , and the parish vicarages Beetzendorf and Klötze were set up to form a community network. Since July 1st, 2008 the parish priest from Gardelegen has looked after the St. Peter Church. On May 2, 2010 today's parish “St. Hildegard ”, to which the St. Petrus Church has belonged ever since. The 2011 census in the European Union showed that 193 of the 8,078 inhabitants of the city of Kalbe, or around 2%, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.

Architecture and equipment

The towerless church has 68 seats. The transparent roof tiles over the chancel are a special structural feature . The back wall of the chancel is dominated by a crucifix . The church is equipped with a statue of St. Mary . Another statue from Spain shows the patron saint of the church, St. Peter.
