The Sankt Joseph Church is the Catholic church in Klötze , a town in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt . The church, named after Saint Joseph of Nazareth , is located south of the cemetery, on Kapellenberg 16 street .

history

A church in Klötze is mentioned for the first time in 1392. In the 16th century the Reformation was introduced in the Altmark , with it the population of Klötze and the Klötzer Church also became Evangelical-Lutheran . In 1852, Salzwedel became the seat of a mission vicarie , which also included Klötze, some 30 kilometers away. In 1920 the Mission Vicarie Salzwedel was raised to a parish.

On September 28, 1930, the newly built church, which had been built with the help of the Bonifatiuswerk , was consecrated . On May 1, 1939, the parish vicarie Beetzendorf was established, to which the church in Klötze belonged from then on. After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in the Klötze area increased due to the influx of Catholic refugees and expellees from the eastern regions of the German Empire .

Since the church no longer has a local priest , it was initially looked after by the pastor from Oebisfelde, and then from December 1, 2006 by the pastor from Gardelegen. On November 1, 2007, the parishes of Gardelegen and Oebisfelde , the Kuratien Kalbe and Mieste , as well as the parish vicarages Beetzendorf and Klötze were set up to form an alliance of parishes from which today's parish “St. Hildegard ”was formed. The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 10,558 inhabitants of the city of Klötze, 200, and thus just under 2%, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church. In 2013 the rectory was sold to private.

Architecture and equipment

inside view

The church with the pointed barrel roof is built of dark bricks and is around 56 meters above sea level . It was built according to plans by the Vorsfeld master builder Klapprott and its architecture is reminiscent of the Christ the King's Church , consecrated in 1926 by Dominikus Böhm in Bischofsheim . Its tower, in which there are two bells , is crowned by a weathercock . The monumental-looking blind facade on the entrance side is decorated with a cross . Above the entrance portal are the letters Alpha and Omega (Α and Ω), the first and the last letter of the classical Greek alphabet. They are a symbol for the beginning and the end, thus for the comprehensive, for God . The shape of the roof can be found in the window above the entrance portal. The sacristy was added later. The iron windows are still from the time the church was built.

The church stalls are also still original, they leave a central aisle free and offer space for 96 visitors. The back wall of the chancel shows a representation of Jesus . In addition to the altar and the tabernacle , the interior also includes a statue of the Virgin Mary, in front of which sacrificial candles can be placed. Furthermore, a picture of the Holy Family , 14 stations of the cross and a confessional . An electronic organ supports the singing of the church service. A community room was set up in the basement of the church.
