history

In 1539 the Reformation was introduced in Gardelegen by Bartholomaeus Rieseberg , a student of Martin Luther . This made the two churches in Gardelegen, the Marienkirche and the Nicolaikirche, Evangelical-Lutheran .

In 1856 a dragoon regiment was stationed in Gardelegen, with over 140 Catholics, mostly from Trier , came to the city. In 1866 parts of the Altmark Uhlan regiment "Hennigs von Treffenfeld" followed , with Catholic soldiers from Eichsfeld joining them. In 1892/93 Heinrich Haehling von Lanzenauer , who later became Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Paderborn , was parish administrator in Gardelegen. In 1897 the Michaelis bell , donated by the Gardelegener and Velpker men's association , was cast.

The church was built in 1898 and named after the Archangel Michael , who is venerated among other things as the patron saint of soldiers. On June 1, 1921, the parish of St. Michael was established. After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Gardelegen increased due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . In 1972 a severe storm destroyed the roof turret , which could not be rebuilt at the time.

In 2002 a small, free-standing bell tower was built behind the church. It was donated by a former parishioner who has lived in Hamburg since 1953 . On November 1, 2007, the parishes of Gardelegen and Oebisfelde , the Kuratien Kalbe and Mieste , as well as the parish vicarages Beetzendorf and Klötze were established to form the current parish of St. Hildegard on May 2, 2010. The 2011 census in the European Union showed that of the 23,568 inhabitants of the town of Gardelegen, 490, or around 2%, belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.
