St. Stephanus (Bürrig)
St. Stephanus is the Roman Catholic parish church in the Leverkusen district of Bürrig .
history
The first church was probably built by the Franks in the 6th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1135 as the property of Deutz Abbey , from which in 1295 the patronage rights over the church passed to the Counts of Berg. The first bells were cast in the 14th century. They are still there today. The nave was rebuilt in the baroque period . This nave was also demolished in 1892 and a basilica in the neo-Romanesque style was built on the site, while the Romanesque tower from the 12th century was retained . The design of the transept was based on the St. Stephen's Church of the same name in Hitdorf .
During the Second World War , the nave was partially destroyed and rebuilt as a simple brick building and connected to the preserved neo-Romanesque choir, so that the overall character of the church interior was preserved. The main architect was Wilhelm Fähler . A Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century has also been preserved.
The church has been illuminated at night since 2004 and is a listed building .
The parish of St. Stephanus Bürrig, together with the parishes of Herz Jesu and St. Antonius Wiesdorf and Christ König (Küppersteg), has formed the Wiesdorf-Bürrig-Küppersteg parish association since 2002, and since autumn 2009 as a parish community with a joint parish council. On January 1, 2012, these parishes merged to form the new parish of St. Stephanus, Leverkusen. Parish church is St. Stephen.
Bells
In the high tower hangs six bells , three of which from 1383 and 1529 are of great historical value.
