St. Stephen

The St. Stephanus cemetery church is a listed church building in Kornelimünster , a district of Aachen ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The so-called mountain church on Schildchenweg was originally the mother parish of the Münsterländchen . It was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century, and has served as a cemetery church since secularization in 1802 .

The late Gothic step hall with an older west building stands on a ridge above the former abbey church of St. Cornelius . A rectangular confessio is in front of the central nave in the east . In the 14th century a three-aisled hall without a transept was built. Parts of this have been preserved in the rising outer masonry and the pointed arches supported by round columns . The central nave was raised during a renovation at the end of the 15th century, the choir bay and the five-eighth end were added and ribbed vaults were drawn in. The three original gable roofs were destroyed by lightning in 1835. After that, the three roofs were replaced by an overall roof and hipped down on the tower . Extensive repairs were carried out in 1900.

tower

On the ground floor of the two-story, rectangular tower there is a three-aisled room with parallel barrel vaults . The upper floor used to be a second chapel , in the Middle Ages the tower was used as a watchtower .
