St. Urbanus Church

The St. Urbanus Church in the Arnsberg district of Voßwinkel is a church consecrated to St. Urban , which was first mentioned in 1214 in a document from the Oelinghausen monastery .

History and Development

In another document from dean Heinrich von Iserlohn from 1231, the pastor Elricus de Vosswinckele is named in the series of witnesses . At this time there must have already been a parish in Vosswinkel, so that the beginning of the St. Urbanus Church probably goes back further than the 13th century.

In a feud that took place around 1420 between Count Adolf von der Mark and the owners of Haus Höllinghofen , the brothers Wennemar and Friedrich von Fürstenberg, the village and the church of Vosswinkel were burned down. A new church was built and consecrated on November 1, 1425 ( Second Church ). This church was enlarged in 1710 after some renovations.

The construction of today's Catholic Church of St. Urbanus ( Third Church ) began in 1750 under the pastor Heinrich Everhard Pentling (* February 19, 1720, † August 5, 1794) after a fire destroyed the previous building in 1749. The building was only consecrated by the abbot of the Wedinghausen monastery in 1765, made more difficult by the effects of the Seven Years' War . With the population growth, an extension was built between 1888 and 1900. A new extension took place in 1938 with the architect Josef Ferber . An extensive renovation of the church began in 2002 and was completed with a large celebration on April 6, 2003.

The old cemetery and the rectory belonged to the St. Urbanus Church , which was sold on February 1, 2013 as part of the dissolution of the parish of St. Urbanus for the purpose of re-establishing the entire parish of St. Johannes Baptist Neheim and Voßwinkel.

Furnishing

The baroque high altar is remarkable. An unknown source reports on the benediction of the third church in Vosswinkel on July 21, 1765: on the same day the high altar and the two side altars were consecrated. The high altar, a gift from Caspar and Friedrich von Droste Thur, gentlemen of Münster and Paderborn, was consecrated in honor of the blessed Virgin and in honor of St. Urbanus, the pope and martyr and patron of the church. The altar cost 190 thalers […] . During the restoration work on the altars in 2002/2003 and intensive research in the archives, the tradition was largely confirmed.

The side altars were donated by Engelbert von Landsberg-Velen and Steinfurt (Herr zu Steinfurt and Echthausen) and Baroness Elisabeth Theodora Bernadina von Boeselager.

The church furnishings include an early Gothic Madonna enthroned with the Christ child on her lap from the first half of the 14th century. There is also another late Gothic Madonna with a halo from the second half of the 15th century. Both figures are, however, copies, the originals are in the Diocesan Museum Paderborn .

A special feature is the modern painting of the old church by the artist Tobias Kammerer from Rottweil during the renovation carried out in 2003. He also designed the new window in the choir of the so-called "weekday church", the historical part of the building.
