The church

The Protestant village church of St. Vitus stands in the walled churchyard in the eastern district of Großballhausen in the municipality of Ballhausen in the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia . In front of it stands the memorial of the soldiers sacrificed in the First World War .

history

The Romanesque church tower was once plastered and today shows the natural stone. It towers above the 1508 in the late Gothic built nave considerably. At the beginning of the 16th century, the tower was increased by one storey. This is now protected by a hipped roof .

A round arched door still indicates the sacristy , which was demolished in the 19th century . The main entrance to the church , a pointed arch portal from 1508, is on the south side. The three choir windows are made of sandstone and have fish bubble tracery . In the hall are the dominant galleries , the pulpit with the altarpiece and the organ made by the organ builder Heidenreich from Bad Tennstedt from 1768 to 1769 .

The Monument Protection Foundation funded the restoration of the windows and the masonry.
