geography

Großballhausen is located on the northern edge of the Unstrut lowland in the middle of the Thuringian Basin, east of Bad Tennstedt . Both Großballhausen and the neighboring Kleinballhausen are located close to each other on Landesstraße 3176 as neighboring districts.

history

Großballhausen was first mentioned in a document between 780 and 802. It is assumed that there were two castles in Großballhausen, namely on the site of the Green or Red Court within the local area.

The Großballhausen monastery of the Cistercian order, first mentioned in 1306, existed in the village . However, this was moved to Großfurra as early as 1326 .

These two districts were located on an important old road over the Hainleite , which led through the Geratal from Arnstadt to here and on. 1110 was called a Heselin von Ballhausen . He was a member of the noble family. In 1170 the names of the Lords of Ballhausen appeared in an imperial document. The lords of Ballhausen probably represented the interests of the Emperor Frederick I . The gentlemen von Klettenberg emerged from this line. The place belonged to the Electoral Saxon Office Weißensee until 1815 . The decisions of the Congress of Vienna he came to Prussia and in 1816 the district Weissensee in the administrative district of Erfurt the province of Saxony assigned to which he belonged until 1944th

Until the land reform there was a good in Großballhausen. It was expropriated by order of the Soviet occupying power and the land was divided between resettlers and poor farmers. On July 1, 1950, the community of Groß Ballhausen was combined with the neighboring Klein Ballhausen (each in the spelling at the time) to form the new community of Ballhausen .
