StadtRAD Hamburg is a public bicycle rental system operated by Deutsche Bahn Connect on behalf of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg .

The system was put into operation on July 10, 2009 and is the most popular rental bike system in Germany with around 2.5 million uses per year and over 450,000 registered users. StadtRAD Hamburg has over 220 rental stations with 2,600 bikes (as of February 2019).

system

StadtRAD Hamburg is based on a modified Call-a-Bike-fix system from Deutsche Bahn, which was previously installed in a similar way in Stuttgart . Borrowing and return take place exclusively at specified rental stations.

Borrowing takes place by selecting the bike number with a smartphone application , by phone or with an NFC key fob directly on the bike, or by logging in with an EC or credit card at the terminal of the rental station and entering the bike number. The bike lock is then released by the system. If an activated StadtRAD is not picked up from the station within about five minutes, the system will automatically cancel the booking. You can return the bike at any station; the bike only needs to be connected to a station and is automatically booked out again. If all fixed spaces are occupied, it is sufficient to park the bike in the immediate vicinity of the station and secure it with the lock on the bike itself.

In principle, a user can rent a maximum of two bikes at the same time.

Registration

The use of the system requires a one-time registration, which can be done either directly via the terminal at the station, by telephone or on the Internet. Users register with their debit or credit card and their (mobile) telephone number, which can be used to identify them when borrowing. The rental fees are billed directly to the cards. The system is also compatible with Call-a-Bike offers from other cities. Users who have registered with StadtRAD Hamburg can also borrow Call-a-Bike bicycles in other cities , but pay the rental fees that are customary there. Accordingly, registered users from other cities can also use the StadtRAD.

Stations

The system has more than 220 stations (as of February 2019) with a total of around 2,600 bicycles. The largest single station is Hauptbahnhof West / Glockengießerwall with 47 parking spaces, the smallest is Gustav-Falke-Straße / Beim Schlump with 16 spaces. The stations are mainly located within the Wallring , in the districts around the Alster and along the Elbe from Rothenburgsort to Ottensen . Around 360,000 people live in this area. The locations are often connected to stops of the S-Bahn and U-Bahn network or are located at special attractions such as the Alster swimming pool . Little by little, locations outside the city center are being developed, so there is also a network of stations in Hamburg-Harburg or Hamburg-Bergedorf .

All stations are equipped with a touch screen terminal with card reader and an RFID reading unit for user identification via credit or EC cards or via an RFID identification medium. Two different terminals are used; In most of the network, a stele-shaped system is used, at the two stations Neumühlen / Övelgönne and Auf dem Sande / Kehrwieder a different, flood-proof model is used, since these two stations are outside the main dike line and thus outside the flood-protected area and within the scope of the periodic occurring floods can be flooded.

At the end of February 2011, the borrowing mode was considerably simplified and the terminals were functionally expanded. Since then, they have offered, among other things, an interactive map of the station locations with details of the available bikes (also available in apps and on the Internet).

Since October 2011, registered StadtRAD users have been offered personalized customer identification media ( Mifare 1 cards based on HF) in the form of key fobs, which further simplify the borrowing process via radio frequency identification ( RFID ) with near field coupling ( NFC ) at the borrowing terminal. The system is currently not compatible with eTicket Deutschland or Touch and Travel .

Expansion of the network

Due to the positive response, the network has been expanded several times since it opened.

When it opened, the system comprised 67 stations and was expanded to 79 stations by July 2010, to 116 stations by the end of March 2012, 128 stations have been in operation since July 2012, and the network was expanded to 131 stations by October 2014. The system was expanded well beyond the city center and reached the Övelgönne museum harbor , the Hagenbeck zoo , the City Nord , Wandsbek Markt and, since 2015, Harburg and Langenhorn . In addition, the network in the areas already served is continuously being consolidated and is gradually opening up additional districts, such as Bahrenfeld and Barmbek-Nord and, since April 2016, Bergedorf as well.

With the extension of the contract in June 2018, DB Connect will remain the operator of the city bikes for another ten years. There is to be a step-by-step expansion to up to 350 stations with which all underground and S-Bahn stops as well as the city centers and district centers are to be connected. The aim is to fully cover the Hamburg urban area. As a result of these renovations, operations were suspended from January 2nd to 31st, 2019.

Tariff

The initial registration costs 5 euros, which are credited to the user as credit and there is an annual fee of 5 euros. The first half hour of every loan is free of charge, from the 31st minute onwards, 10 cents per minute are charged. However, the amount is capped after 3 hours of rental.

There are also various options for reducing tariffs:

  • Holders of season tickets from the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund or a Bahncard receive a 25 percent discount of 8 cents per minute after registering accordingly.
  • For holders of a customer card from the Hamburg drugstore chain Budnikowsky , the first 60 minutes of a journey are free for an annual fee of 10 euros.

statistics

Popular means of transport in leisure time. Here at the port birthday 2018

After the first 100 days of operation, the system had around 33,000 registered users who had made more than 223,000 trips. Three quarters of the journeys took less than 30 minutes and were therefore free of charge for users. After the first year of operation, the system had more than 53,000 registered users who together made more than half a million journeys. Each of the 1,500 bikes at the time is used an average of 2.3 times a day, and on days with peak demand more than seven times. In July 2011 there were over 100,000 registered customers, in February 2012 130,000 customers were registered, in April 2015 285,000 and in July 2016 the number of registered users was a good 355,000. Most of the registered users are between 26 and 35 years old, the male users slightly predominate (56% male, 44% female).

The income from registration and loan processes as well as from service fees amounted to 198,500 euros in 2009, in 2010 it was 490,100 euros. The Senate gives the operator fee for 2011 at 1,310,421 euros (at that time with 103 stations) and for 2012 at 1,700,349 euros (at that time with 123 stations).

In 2010, 726,000 loan transactions were registered. In 2012, the number of journeys was over two million trips, well above expectations, in 2015 it was 2.5 million and in 2016 it was already over three million uses.

In terms of customer and usage figures as well as the cost-benefit ratio (trips per bike per day, customers per bike per day, costs per usage), Stadt-RAD Hamburg was more successful in 2011 than all of the others from Deutsche Bahn Connect's predecessor company DB Rent GmbH operated bicycle rental systems in Germany (including Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart).

External presentation and marketing

In contrast to other cities in which Call-a-Bike products are offered, the StadtRAD is primarily positioned as an urban offer. The fact that the offer is technically, materially and organizationally provided by Deutsche Bahn, however, is communicated less aggressively. This can already be seen in the product name and in the fact that the bicycles bear the signet of the city of Hamburg much more prominently than the Deutsche Bahn logo. The eye-catching traffic red coloring of the wheels also differs significantly from the more reserved silver gray of Call-a-Bike.

Name and history of the system

The name StadtRAD was found in and for Hamburg. StadtRAD Lüneburg has been operating in the same way as in Hamburg since 2013 with initially five and now seven stations.

Until February 28, 2011, borrowing and return required the entry of a four-digit opening or receipt code, which was communicated to the user when borrowing from the terminal or by telephone and when returning the bike. Up to that point it was only possible to return a StadtRAD to stations with free parking spaces. If all the places at a station were occupied, the user was credited with an additional time credit of 15 minutes after notifying the operator, which he could use to find an alternative station. This regulation had caused displeasure among users because some stations were often full at certain times.
