Budnikowsky ( Budni for short ) is a drugstore chain based in Hamburg , which is operated by Iwan Budnikowsky GmbH & Co. KG . It operates branches in the greater Hamburg area and is currently expanding in cooperation with Edeka with branches in other federal states.

The company is the market leader in the greater Hamburg area . However, it is well behind the big competitors nationwide.

history

Iwan Budnikowsky (1890–1968) was born in Perleberg ( Brandenburg ) as the son of the glove maker and bandagist Vincenz Budnikowsky and his wife Margarethe Dorothee Elise. The family moved to Hamburg-Wandsbek , where the father ran a bandage shop. After school and training, Iwan Budnikowsky registered his own trade as a bandagist with the Magistrate of Harburg (Elbe) on October 2, 1912 . The location of his business was at the local Mühlenstraße 33 (today: Schloßmühlendamm), where he had taken over a bandage business that had been there since 1896. When the First World War broke out , Ivan Budnikowsky joined the military on August 2, 1914 and returned to Mühlenstrasse after the war. The father died on May 17, 1919. Ivan moved into his parents' house in Wandsbeker and took over his father's business.

On September 9, 1920, Iwan Budnikowsky married Henni Dorothea Minna Köhrmann, born in 1898. In 1921 he started selling soap products and opened the first specialty soap shop. In October 1924 he expanded with a second branch in Billhorner Röhrendamm ( Rothenburgsort ). Further branches followed in 1927: on May 25th in the Harburger Markthalle, on November 10th in Hamburg-Heimfeld and on December 15th in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg . On February 17, 1925, Budnikowsky registered his trade as a soap wholesaler. On May 14, 1928, the company name was renamed "Iwan Budnikowsky". In 1930 the company headquarters was moved from Harburg to the Chilehaus . From year to year more branches were added, so the 25th branch was opened in 1933. After the National Socialists came to power , Iwan Budnikowsky kept more and more away from business life and increasingly withdrew from business from 1937. Numerous branches were destroyed by Allied air raids during the Second World War .

After the end of the Second World War, the company started over with nine branches. In 1967 the company headquarters moved to Wandsbeker Königstrasse 62 in Hamburg-Wandsbek. Ivan Budnikowsky's daughter Ruth joined the company on April 1, 1949 and became a personally liable partner on February 13, 1957.

In 1959, the company acquired a plot of land in Wandsbek and relocated the headquarters there. In the same year Iwan Budnikowsky handed the business over to his daughter. This led the company in the following years. In 1960 the range was expanded to include cosmetic products and the range comprised up to 3,000 items. In 1969, over-the-counter drugs and medical aids were added to the store offer. In 1970 the branches were converted to the self-service concept .

From 1979, Cord Wöhlke took over the management, who had been with the company since 1970. In 1980 the company had around 450 employees. In 1987 there were 54 branches in Hamburg. By 1997 the number grew to 72 and by 1999 to 80 branches. From 1999 to 2004 the products were also sold via the BUDNI shop on the Internet, after which it was initially discontinued. But the delivery service in Hamburg remained for orders in Hamburg and the Hamburg area. An online shop was later integrated into the website again.

In 2000 a 700 m² branch was opened at Osterstrasse 95 in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel and the BUDNI customer card was introduced. In 2002 the company had 1,600 employees. In 2003 there were 92 branches with more than 900 employees in Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Hamburg with a turnover of 225 million euros ; the new construction of the logistics center - at that time the most modern service center (DLZ) in Europe - in Hamburg-Allermöhe with 14,395 m² of built-up area and a storage area of around 50,000 m² was opened. In 2004 new openings followed in Itzehoe and Harsefeld , in 2006 in the Alstertal shopping center in Poppenbüttel and the “Budnikowsky House” as the main branch with 1,600 m² in Europa Passage in downtown Hamburg. In March 2006 the 100th branch was opened in the Nedderfeld Center and sales amounted to 275 million euros. Of around 1,800 employees in 2006, the targeted proportion of employees over 50 was more than 20 percent. For this, the company received the “Companies with a vision” award in December 2006 from the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. In January 2007, six stores owned by the former Ihr-Platz franchisee Peter Ahrling were integrated into the branch network; they are located in the Cloppenburg area and are operated as a franchise .

In mid-2011 Budnikowsky had around 154 branches, most of which are operated by the company itself. Sales amounted to EUR 390 million. In addition, since 1999, the chain has been running dm's own brands as part of a cooperation agreement .

Since October 2011, the drugstore chain has also been the first German retailer to offer mobile online shopping via QR code and large posters as a virtual sales area at subway stations in around 11 cities. The posters show shelves with products from the online shop.

Since January 1st, 2012 Budnikowsky has been the clearing partner of the Swiss-based Markant Handels- und Industriewaren-Vermittlungs AG . Since there were disagreements with the previous partner Edeka, the change was announced in the summer of 2011. Dm's own brands continued to be sold until the end of 2013. Budnikowsky has been selling goods under its own brand since 2014.

From May 2017 the cooperation between Budnikowsky and Edeka was further strengthened. Among other things, a joint, nationwide drugstore chain is to be founded. Joint purchasing is also planned. The Cartel Office has expressly welcomed this cooperation.

On August 30, 2018, the first branch outside of the core area opened in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg. A second location and further branches in the capital are planned.

On April 11, 2019, the first branch of an independent EDEKA merchant opened in Bamberg , Franconia , another city branch and one in the surrounding area followed in May. On June 4th, two branches followed in Offenburg , the headquarters of Edeka Südwest . These are the first branches in southern Germany.
