The town church St. Salvator is a local evangelical church building in Stadtroda , in the Saale-Holzland-Kreis ( Thuringia ). The community belongs to the Eisenberg parish in the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The previous church was first mentioned in a document in 1449, it is probably much older, as it was described in a document from 1475 as being dilapidated for its age . It was originally dedicated to Our Dear Women . In the great city fire of 1638 it was completely burned down by the Swedes and replaced by a new church called Zum Salvator .

The foundation walls of the chancel are preserved from the late Gothic building. This has a 3/8 end . Presumably a new nave was built in the 16th century , of which the west portal with its rich forms, from the transition period from the late Gothic to the Renaissance , has been preserved. The historicizing, pointed arched portal serves as the main entrance; it is framed with scrollwork and provided with inscriptions and crowned.

During the reconstruction after the Thirty Years War, the building was essentially given its present form. The walls are structured by differently arranged windows.

The chancel is raised by four steps to the octagonal nave.

On the roof sits a roof turret . The bells hang in a separate bell house that was built next to the church.

There are two-storey galleries on the south and north sides of the interior ; on the west side a single-storey organ gallery , which is completely taken up by the baroque organ front. The galleries were originally accessed via external stone stairs, which were replaced by wooden stairs in the interior during the last extensive renovation from 1963 to 1968. The outer galleries were demolished. At the same time, the interior was redesigned.

Furnishing

  • The two bronze bells were cast in autumn 1977, they complement each other tonally with the large steel bell. A small steel bell was removed after the First World War .
  • A wooden altar from the 19th century has been replaced by a brick canteen .
  • The high crucifix above the altar table was carved in 1596, it comes from the church in Culmitzsch , which had to give way to the opencast mine .
  • The so-called Moses pulpit was donated in 1652 by the administrator Tobias Seifardt, it is at the rear of the choir. In front of the pillar of the pulpit there is a life-size figure of Moses holding the tablets of the law. Above is the parapet, in front of carved reliefs there are figures of Ezekiel , Isaiah, David, Daniel, Jeremiah and Tobias. The putti on the sound cover carry instruments of torture, they are meant to point to the crucifixion of Christ. The group of putti is crowned with a representation of the risen Christ, who is shown with a halo and a globe.
  • The wooden baptismal font is a work from the middle of the 17th century. The carved baptismal font is carried by a kneeling angel. The baptismal bowl was made of pewter. During a restoration between 1963 and 1968, the baptismal stand as well as the Moses pulpit were restored to the original light-colored versions in white, gold and black.
  • The organ was built in 1938 by the organ building company Gebr. Jehmlich from Dresden . The prospectus of the previous instrument was retained. Aural changes have been made to the inventory of the registers .
