Standard Operating Procedure (Alternative title: Standard procedure ) is an American documentary by Errol Morris from the year 2008 . He deals with the Abu Ghraib torture scandal and tries to fathom the story that led to the images of prisoner abuse that were published around the world.

content

Standard Operating Procedure tries to find out by means of interviews with those involved and simulated scenes from the game which circumstances led to the torture scandal in the Abu Ghraib military prison and what exactly happened there. The film also demonstrates how the privately published pictures of prisoner abuse were used to convict the perpetrators within the guards. The film title Standard Operating Procedure , in German about "usual procedure", alludes to the normality of such incidents in the war on terror .

background

Standard Operating Procedure started in German cinemas on May 29, 2008 and was released on January 15, 2009 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc .

criticism

"Using formally unpretentious Talking Head" interviews, interrupted by partially staged sequences, the film makes it clear that the documented tortures were not just the offenses of a few, but were and are sanctioned as systemic "standard procedures" and politically tolerated. The sheer force of the interrogatively obtained material lets formal weaknesses take a back seat. "

Awards

Standard Operating Procedure received the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2008 .
