Staņislavs Petkēvičs

Staņislavs Petkēvičs (Polish Stanisław Petkiewicz; born November 7, 1908 in Riga , † December 29, 1960 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) was a Latvian - Polish medium and long-distance runner .

He started for Latvia until 1928. At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928, he came seventh over 5000 m and 15th over 10,000 m .

From 1926 to 1928 he was three times in a row Latvian champion over 5000 m , 10,000 m and in cross country , in 1927 and 1928 over 1500 m and 1928 over 800 m .

From 1929 he started for Poland. In 1929 he was Polish cross-country champion, in 1930 and 1931 over 800 m. In 1929 he was voted Polish Sportsman of the Year after defeating Paavo Nurmi .

The withdrawal of amateur status prevented further participation in the Olympic Games in 1932. From 1934 he coached the Polish national team. In 1939 he emigrated to Argentina, where he worked as a sports teacher and in 1945 founded the Instituto de Cúltura Física .
