history

Steffen Nibbe, born in 1983 in Itzehoe , went to study in Kiel and founded the group Staring Girl in its first line-up in 2005. Before the official debut album Seven Hours and 40 Minutes was released in 2012 on the Dresden label K&F Records , the band had already released two mini-albums on their own and sampler contributions on the net label Omaha Records . This label was originally founded by Gisbert zu Knyphausen , who had previously covered the staring girl song Everyone goes alone in his live program. The band already played concerts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, u. a. a two-week support tour for Gisbert zu Knyphausen in 2011. In an interview with the NDR , Nibbe describes that the line-up of the band has changed after moving from Kiel to Hamburg . In addition to Robert Weitkamp (drums), three members of the original Knyphausen band have also been part of the current line-up since 2015: Gunnar Ennen (guitar, keys, vocals), Jens Fricke (guitar) and Frenzy Suhr (bass). In 2017 the band also joined a. as opening act for the band Erdmöbel . On April 20, 2018, the band released their second album In Eine Bild on KOMBÜSE Schallrodukte, the label of the Hamburg kitchen sessions , where the band already recorded their pieces live in 2012 and 2018. At the release concert in Hamburg's Knust , the band played the full length of the new album. For the music video for their song Diebe, Halunken und Menschen , the band documented a day in the life of the homeless Nicole Förster, whose story the band became aware of through the magazine Hinz und Kunzt . In August 2019, the band announced a line-up change on the drums: Lennart Wohlt joined the band for Robert Weitkamp, who also plays for OVE.

style

Musically, Staring Girls can be classified in the field of guitar-oriented, melancholy singer-songwriter music and indie pop with German lyrics. The mostly restrained and unexcited songs live from Nibbe's narrative voice and lyrics. Above all, the observation prose Nibbes stands out for the Kieler Nachrichten : In the piece mattress shop neon tube light he describes a journey out of Hamburg “so vividly and dreamily that you sit next to him on the bus in your mind's eye”. For Laut.de it is "precisely this tendency towards the everyday and undiscovered beauty that makes the lyrics and the restrained melodies of the northern lights something very special". With In one picture the style became musically more variable and diversified, partly reminiscent of Neil Young and Wilco .
