Rose station

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Station Rose (short STR ) is an audiovisual artist duo and is one of the pioneers of digital art. In 1988 Elisa Rose (media artist, born 1959 in Linz ) & Gary Danner (musician, media artist, born 1959 in Linz) founded Station Rose in Vienna as a public multimedia laboratory, after both graduating from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (Magisterium ) had completed.

The work of “Station Rose” can be classified into the categories of media art , performance art , digital art, video art, computer art , net art and electronic music .

activities

From the foundation of the station, the spectrum of STR activities ranged from CD , vinyl , DVD and CD-ROM productions, through art production and research on the subject of virtual realities and the curating of symposia to lectures and performances, exhibitions in Galleries, museums, universities and underground.

In 1988/89 STR carried out multimedia field research (post-graduate scholarship) with computers, scanners and samplers in Cairo / Egypt for 8 months (“station in the field”).

Station Rose organized the first techno events in Vienna in 1989 (“Gunafa Clubbing”), moved to Frankfurt am Main in 1991 and went online at the same time.

In their Gunafa clubbing, they started using the Internet as an element of their audiovisual live performances from 1992 onwards. The real-time communication between globally connected users was projected onto the walls of the Frankfurt techno club "XS". In addition, sounds and visuals were played on the computer in real time.

In 1995 STR received the Prix Ars Electronica (honorable mention). In the same year they coined the term “digital bohemian”. 1996-1998 they had an artist contract with Sony Music. 1996–1998 they were part of the virtual community project "Electric Minds" by Howard Rheingold. In 1998 the book "1st Decade" designed by them was published. Since 1999 STR has been webcasting on www.stationrose.com

2002–2004 Rose and Danner shared a professorship at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt (Media Production). From 2002 to 2006 the one-hour program “Station Rose - Best of Webcasting” was broadcast weekly on hr-fernsehen / ARD Digital (a total of approx. 31 hours of audiovisual compositions). In addition, the CD and DVD “Best of Webcasting” were released in 2005.

Station Rose was one of the first artist groups in the world to explore the possibilities of interactive media and the Internet. Audiovisual performances in art galleries and universities are on an equal footing with actions at media festivals and events in the club area / underground in the group's catalog of works. Webcasting and live streaming play a prominent role here.

After Elisa Rose and Gary Danner lived abroad for a total of 20 years, with their main residence in Frankfurt am Main, they returned to Vienna in 2011.
