Etymology and history

Steeger Oak (2008)

The origin of the name Steeger Eiche is not exactly known. A connection with an oak and the surname or place name 'Steeg' can be assumed.

Steeger Eiche was mentioned as a dependent Kotten as early as 1677, one of the three estates from Unter vorm Steeg , with six hectares in the Stackenberger Busch.

On the 1824 map of Poyda, Steeger Eiche is recorded as 'Steigereich', later on a map from 1892/84 as 'Steegereiche'. On the topographic maps (TK25) from the 1960s as 'Steeger Eiche'.

Steeger Eiche belonged to the mayor's office of Sonnborn , separated from Haan in 1867 , which was transferred to the municipality of Vohwinkel in 1888, losing territory to Elberfeld .

In the municipality encyclopedia for the province of Rhineland from 1888 two houses with 21 inhabitants are given.
