Stefánia Moldován

Stefánia Moldován (born August 24, 1931 in Șieu-Odorhei , Romania ; † April 12, 2012 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Romanian-Hungarian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Moldován was born in Transylvania , Romania ; her father was of Armenian origin. In 1944 her family moved to Hungary.

Moldován studied singing from 1948 to 1953 at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest as a student of Jenö Sipos. Her singing career began as a choir player. She made her stage debut as an opera singer in 1954 at the Szeged Opera House as Mimì in La Bohème . From 1954 to 1961 she was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Szeged Opera House. In 1961 she was engaged at the Budapest National Opera, of which she remained a permanent member of the ensemble for over 25 years until she retired.

Moldován mainly sang the youthful-dramatic soprano part ; Her repertoire focused on women in the operas of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini . Her stage roles included Leonora in Il trovatore , Amelia in Un ballo in maschera , Desdemona in Otello (alongside József Simándy ), the title roles in Manon Lescaut and Tosca and Minnie in La fanciulla del West . Moldován also sang parts of German opera, in Hungarian: Leonore in Fidelio , Agathe in Der Freischütz and Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer . Other roles were Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Melinda in the opera Bánk bán by Ferenc Erkel .

In October 1964 she took part in the world premiere of Sándor Szokolay's opera Blood Wedding at the Budapest State Opera .

Moldován has made guest appearances at the Bolshoi Theater , in Leningrad , Prague , Warsaw , Brno and, in German-speaking countries, at the Berlin State Opera and the Komische Oper Berlin .

Moldován last lived in Budapest in a retirement and nursing home for artists.
