Stefan E. Hormuth (born November 29, 1949 in Heidelberg ; † February 21, 2010 there ) was a German social psychologist . Most recently he held positions in university and science policy: from 1997 to 2009 as President of the Justus Liebig University in Gießen (JLU), from 2001 to 2007 as Vice President for International Affairs of the University Rectors' Conference and from 2008 to 2010 as President of the German Academic Association Exchange Service (DAAD).

Life

After studying at the Universities of Heidelberg and Austin / Texas , Stefan Hormuth obtained a diploma in psychology from the Heidelberg University in 1975. With a DAAD graduate scholarship for the University of Texas in Austin, he went back to the USA and received his doctorate there in 1979. From 1979 to 1981 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in social psychology at Northwestern University / Evanston in Illinois / USA. He then worked as a university assistant for social and ecological psychology at the University of Heidelberg. After his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg in 1987, he was appointed Professor of Ecological and Social Psychology there that same year. In 1990 he accepted a professorship for social psychology at the University of Giessen. From 1993 to 1997 he held a chair of the same name at the Technical University of Dresden . He conducted research on fundamental and applied issues in the area of ​​"changes in human-environment relationships".

University policy

On December 16, 1997, while student protests were taking place in Gießen , he was elected President of the Justus Liebig University in Gießen to succeed Heinz Bauer . His second term began in December 2003 and lasted until December 15, 2009. His successor is Joybrato Mukherjee .

He took part in numerous functions and committees for the internationalization of German universities: from 2001 to 2007 Stefan Hormuth was Vice President for International Affairs of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) and in 2007 he succeeded Theodor Berchem for the term of office from January 1, 2008 to 2011 of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) .

He died after a long and serious illness in his hometown of Heidelberg. DAAD Vice President Max Georg Huber continued in office until Sabine Kunst was elected as the new President on June 29th .

honors and awards

Since 1999 he has been a Fellow of the American Psychological Society (today: Association for Psychological Science ), and since 2001 a member of the German Fulbright Commission . In December 2009 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Kazan State University , the Russian partner university of JLU, for his “special contribution to cooperation” .
