Ewald von Massow

Ewald Robert Valentin von Massow (born April 17, 1869 in Belgard ; † October 12, 1942 in Berlin ) was a German major general and SS group leader .

Life

Ewald von Massow came from the Pomeranian noble family Massow . He was the eldest son of the general of the cavalry Robert von Massow (1839-1927) and his first wife Martha, born von Loeper (* 1848, † September 5, 1872 in Kolberg ).

He graduated from high school and on March 23, 1887 joined the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army as a flag junior . In the further course of his military career, Massow took part in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in China as prime lieutenant in 1900 and received the Order of the Crown, IV class with swords. After his return to the General Staff in November 1911 , he was added to the Army General Staff on March 22, 1903, when he was promoted to captain . From September 1905 to January 1907 Massow was in the general staff of III. Army Corps , then worked as a company commander in the Guard Fusilier Regiment and then returned to the Army General Staff on April 17, 1908. Shortly afterwards he worked as a military attaché at the German embassies in Bucharest , Belgrade and Sofia . In September 1911 Massow was called back to Germany and transferred as a major to the General Staff of the 6th Division . After two years of activity, he was transferred to the General Staff. During the Balkan Wars of 1912/13 he was commanded to the Bulgarian headquarters.

At the beginning of World War I served Massow in the General Staff of the First Army Corps , was on December 24, 1914 Lieutenant Colonel promoted and served from 15 April 1917 as adjutant of Kaiser Wilhelm II. As a Major General he was placed after the ceasefire for disposition .

After the NSDAP took over government, he became President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in 1933 .

Massow became a member of the NSDAP ( membership number 315.743) and later head of the Reich leadership of the NSDAP. No. 39421. He joined the SS in which he on 9 November 1934 oberführer and on 30 January 1936 SS brigade leader was promoted. He was finally appointed SS-Gruppenführer in 1939.

He married Erika von Wallenberg-Pachaly in Breslau on October 15, 1902 and lived with his family in the house at Brückenallee 31 in Berlin and a second house in Rotherberg near Zillerthal-Erdmannsdorf in Silesia . There is a son from the marriage, Karl Wilhelm Detlef von Massow.

Massow died of heart failure in Berlin in 1942 .
