Stefan Mayer (set designer)

Stefan Mayer (born June 26, 1959 in Stuttgart ) is a German director, set and costume designer.

Life

Mayer is a son of the architect Ro Mayer and the graphic artist Marlis Mayer. After a one-year internship in all departments of the Württemberg State Theater (including with Jean Pierre Ponnelle's “Ring des Nibelungen” and as a lighting assistant with Claus Peymann's “Iphegenie”), he studied stage design with Jürgen Rose at the Stuttgart Art Academy . This was followed by some assistance in Bochum, Düsseldorf and Zurich. With a scholarship from the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg , he later studied lighting design at Yale University in New Haven.

Permanent engagements took him from 1989–1993 to the Stadttheater Freiburg as a permanent set designer (artistic director: Friedrich Schirmer ), 1993–1995 to Schauspiel Frankfurt (artistic director: Peter Eschberg ), as head of equipment from 1995–1999 at the Schauspielhaus Bochum (artistic director: Leander Haußmann ) and 1999– 2000 for FAUST at the Expo 2000 as a set designer (director: Peter Stein). For the Freiburg State Theater he designed the entire corporate identity (including the logo and theater newspaper). From 1982 he worked with Peter Stein , Hans Neuenfels , Leander Haußmann, Jürgen Kruse , Thomas Vinterberg , Klaus Michael Grüber , Karin Henkel , Matthias Kaschig, Matthias Hartmann , Nicolas Stemann , Christof Nel , Alexander Nerlich , Christine Mielitz , Alexander Charim and Richard Siegal , Claudio Abbado and Donald C. Runnicles together. Since 1998 he has been directing operas and drama himself, while also taking on the set-up.
