description

Vegetative characteristics

The Steinquendel speedwell grows as an annual , herbaceous plant that usually only reaches heights of 5 to 25 centimeters. At the bottom it usually has several, arching upwardly curved side rungs. The upright stem is almost bare in the lower part, otherwise sparsely hairy and downy with glands.

The opposite arranged leaves are divided into short petioles and leaf blades. The simple leaf blade is ovate to rounded with rounded or slightly wedge-shaped base. They are indistinctly serrated to entire or weakly notched. The lower leaves are almost bare and the upper leaves are sparsely downy with glandular hairs and have entire margins.

Generative characteristics

The flowering time is mainly in the months of April to June. The flowers are arranged in loose, later very elongated, racemose inflorescences . The flower stalks are about once or twice as long as their bracts. The relatively small, hermaphrodite flowers have a double flower envelope . The corolla is pale blue and darker (striped) veined and has a yellowish throat.

The fruit stalk is two to three times as long as the calyx. The very deep, acute-angled, strongly flattened capsule fruit is as long as the sepals, but protrudes slightly and is abundantly hairy with glands.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 or 16.

Occurrence

Veronica acinifolia occurs in western, southern and southeastern Europe . In the east, it is distributed to southern Russia and western Asia. The species is very rare in Central Europe.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the species is very rare and threatened with extinction in the entire area. Occurrences in Germany were mainly found in the south-western area, most of which, however, are now extinct.

The Steinquendel-Ehrenpreis grows in small sedge societies and in fields. It thrives best on moist to wet, lime-free, usually somewhat dense, clayey and sandy loam soils . In Central Europe it is a character species of the Centunculo-Anthoceretum from the Nanocyperion association.
