Stempel also Stempell is the name of a noble family from Prussia and Courland . Branches of the family currently persist.

history

The stamps belong to the Westphalian nobility of the Principality of Osnabrück and first appeared in a document with Thidericus Stempel et filius ejus Johannes in the year 1203. The continuous secured line of the family begins with Otto von Stempel , documented 1620 and 1634, gentleman on large and small Elsken. With the Teutonic Order , the family came to the Baltic States and Pomerania in the 17th century , while it was extinguished in their home country around 1670. Otto Stempell was registered with the Courland Knighthood on July 20, 1634 . The RussianRecognition of the baron title for the Courland family branches took place on June 10, 1853 and February 28, 1862 by ukase of the conducting Senate. The Prussian approval for the use of the baron title was granted on September 25, 1903 after numerous members of the family had served as officers in the Prussian army and extensive and long-term property ownership existed in both Pomerania and East Prussia.
