Stepan Lwowytsch Rudnyzkyj ( Ukrainian Степан Львович Рудницький * November 21 jul. / 3. December  1877 greg. In Przemyśl , Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria , Austria-Hungary , † 3. November 1937 in Sandarmoch , Karelian ASSR , Soviet Union ) was a Ukrainian Geographer and cartographer .

Rudnyzkyj was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR from 1929 to 1934 and is considered the founder of Ukrainian geomorphology and anthropogeography as well as political, socio-economic and demographic geography.

Life

Stepan Rudnyzkyj studied at the University of Lemberg between 1895 and 1899 and at the University of Vienna from 1899 to 1901 . After completing his studies, he was a teacher at a grammar school in Ternopil between 1902 and 1908 and taught at the University of Lviv between 1908 and 1914. During this time he wrote and published his two-volume work "A Brief Geography of Ukraine" (1910 and 1914 ff.).

During the First World War was active in the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine in Vienna and was an advisor to the government in exile of the Ukrainian West Ukrainian People's Republic . In 1919 he was invited as a professor at the University of Kamyanets-Podilskyj , but did not stay there long and moved to Vienna, where he was co-organizer of the Ukrainian free university and also taught there as a professor. He then worked as a professor at Charles University in Prague .

In 1926 he was invited by the Ukrainian government to organize geographic research in Kharkiv , at the time the capital of the Ukrainian SSR . After accepting this offer, he became professor of geography at the Kharkiv Institute for National Education and director of the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute for Geography and Cartography, which he founded . He was also the first holder of the Chair of Geography at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

He was arrested on March 23, 1933 and sentenced on September 23, 1933 as "an outspoken propagator of fascism in geography" to five years' imprisonment. Some of his students were also arrested and tried. He was taken to the Gulag on the Solovetsky Islands in Karelia in the spring of 1935 , and then to Sandarmoch, where he was jointly and severally executed on November 3, 1937 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution . a. shot with Mykola Kulisch , Les Kurbas and Mykola Serow . In May 1965 he was rehabilitated.
