Stephanos II. Ghattas

Stephanos II. Cardinal Ghattas CM (born January 16, 1920 in Sheikh Zein-el-Dine , Egypt , † January 20, 2009 in Cairo ) was Patriarch of Alexandria of the Coptic Catholic Church and Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Andraos (Andreas, baptismal name) Ghattas studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Rome and was ordained a priest in 1944 . He then lectured philosophy and dogmatics at the seminary of Tahta and in 1952 entered the congregation of the Lazarists (Vincentians). After six years as a pastor in Lebanon , he became superior and economist of his order in Alexandria.

In 1967 the Synod of the Coptic Catholic Bishops elected him Bishop of Luxor ( Thebes ). He was ordained bishop on June 9, 1967 by Cardinal Stephanos I. Sidarouss CM, the Patriarch of Alexandria, co- consecrators were Isaac Ghattas , Bishop of Minya , Youhanna Nueir , Bishop of Assiut , and Youhanna Kabes , Auxiliary Bishop in Alexandria . In 1986 he succeeded Stephanos I. Andraos Ghattas took the name Stéphanos II after his election. On February 24, 2000, he met Pope John Paul II in Cairo as part of his inauguration ; a meeting of particular historical value.

Pope John Paul II accepted him in the consistory of February 21, 2001 as cardinal bishop in the college of cardinals . On March 27, 2006, he resigned from the Patriarchal Office for reasons of age. Archbishop Antonios Naguib was elected as his successor .
