Stephen Gould (singer)

Stephen Gould (born 1962 in Roanoke , Virginia ) is an American opera singer ( tenor ).

He is the son of a concert pianist and a Methodist pastor .

Gould studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and was then a member of the young talent program of the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Lyric Opera Center for American Artists). In addition to his first opera roles, Gould also sang in the musical The Phantom of the Opera before he was able to assert himself as a heroic tenor . He made his debut in this field as Florestan in Beethoven's opera Fidelio .

Gould is one of the most sought-after Wagner singers worldwide. He sang Siegfried in Wagner's Ring at the State Operas in Vienna and Munich , and from 2006 to 2008 at the Bayreuth Festival . Here he made his debut as Tannhäuser in 2004 and also played Tristan in Katharina Wagner's production in 2015 . Also in 2004 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera, where in 2015/16 he performed under Simon Rattle and Ádám Fischer Siegfried and Parsifal.

His repertoire includes roles such as Siegmund ( Die Walküre ), Erik ( The Flying Dutchman ), Paul ( The Dead City ), Bacchus ( Ariadne auf Naxos ), Kaiser ( The Woman Without Shadow ) and the title roles in Lohengrin , Parsifal or Otello , but also the Gurre-Lieder by Arnold Schönberg and the solo tenor in Beethoven's 9th Symphony .

Gould lives alternately in the USA and in Vienna, where he has rented an apartment. He thinks it is essential that a Wagner singer lives in Germany or Austria (“Because you can't learn Wagner with a coach alone”). He speaks fluent German.
