Steve Blank

Steven Gary Blank (born 1953 in New York City ) is an American entrepreneur, lecturer and author.

Life

Blank was born to immigrants who ran a grocery store on the Lower East Side of New York City. He grew up with his sister, who was 12 years older than him, and was raised by his mother alone from the age of six after his father left the family. Blank studied briefly at the University of Michigan on a scholarship , which he left after just one semester.

He hitchhiked to Miami and found work at the airport. His job there was to load racehorses into planes. While working at the airport, he developed an interest in flight electronics , which he cultivated until the early 1970s when he joined the Air Force . His military service took him to Thailand during the Vietnam War , where after a year and a half at the age of 20, he led a team of 15 electronics engineers .

After Blank finished his military service in 1976, he came to Silicon Valley in 1976. He found his first job there at ESL, a startup associated with American intelligence services that dealt with technical monitoring of compliance with international agreements. The company assisted the government in gaining knowledge about Soviet technology and weapons developments during the Cold War.

Blank is a co-founder of 8 companies, including E.Piphany . He worked at Zilog and MIPS Computers, Convergent Technologies , Ardent Computer, Pixar , SuperMac Technologies, ESL and Rocket Science Games.

He has taught at Stanford at the Haas School of Business , at the University of California, Berkeley , at the California Institute of Technology and at Columbia University. Blank is considered to be the inventor of the lean startup method.
