Steven Hammell (born February 18, 1982 in Rutherglen ) is a former Scottish football player .

Career

Steven Hammell was born in Rutherglen in 1982 . He began his professional football career in 1999 at Motherwell FC . He made his debut in 2000 at the age of 18 against FC Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League . With Hammell in the starting line-up, the club lost the Scottish League Cup final against Glasgow Rangers in 2005 . A year later, and after over 200 league games, Hammell moved to the English second division promoted Southend United on a free transfer . As third from bottom, the team rose straight back to the third division at the end of the season . Hammell was active as a regular player and completed 39 of 46 league games. After half a season in League One , his old club from Scotland signed him for a transfer fee of £ 110,000  . In 2011 he lost with the club in the final of the Scottish Cup against Celtic Glasgow . As a constant regular in Motherwell , the full-back completed his 500th competitive game for Well in April 2014. After the end of the 2013-14 season , Hammell extended his contract in Motherwell for two years. With Motherwell he reached the final in the Scottish League Cup again in 2017, which was lost to Celtic. Hammell ended his professional career in January 2018.

National team

Steven Hammell played twelve times for the Scottish U-21 national team between 2001 and 2004 and scored one goal. On November 17, 2004 he made his international debut in the senior team against Sweden under Tommy Burns when he came on for Andy Webster . No further missions were made.
