The company was founded in 1853 by the dyer Friedrich August Stichweh as a dye works, printer and French laundry facility in Hanover. The first branch was opened in 1866 and existed until 1943. In 1860, Stichweh also introduced dry cleaning . In 1891 the company was relocated to the village of Limmer near Hanover , where it is still located today. Wilhelm Stichweh , a grandson of the company's founder, had been head of the company since 1923 . In a short time he succeeded in massively expanding the business. In 1928 the company had around 300 employees. After heavy destruction by the air raids on Hanover in World War II, the company was rebuilt after 1945. In 1960, the company began to restructure and expand the branch network to include northern Germany. New services were introduced, such as the bulk laundry service, and the dye works were separated in 1967. In 1968 the company had 138 sales outlets, including 98 quick-cleaning shops. From the 1980s onwards, the company was decentralized. To this end, the franchise system was introduced and shop owners were given more independence. In addition to normal laundry cleaning, carpet and leather cleanings are also carried out nowadays.

Factory building designed according to the principles of the Bauhaus

The Cologne-born architect Walter Wickop designed several factory buildings for the main factory in Limmer . They were created between 1926 and 1930. The architecture followed the principles of the Bauhaus by Walter Gropius . Objectively clear cubes form the building complex, which is also structured by horizontal bands. The facade also features a change in material between bricks and plastered surfaces. The Stichweh factory remained a rare example of this architectural trend in Hannover-Linden / Limmer.

In 2010, the redevelopment of the company premises into the Stichweh-Leinepark began . Several new buildings were erected under the direction of Hanno Ziehm, a great-great-grandson of the company's founder Friedrich Stichweh. They are used by various tenants: several retail businesses, the West Police Inspection and the Lower Saxony teachers' seminar. The historic buildings from 1930 were also renovated and brought closer to their original state. At the beginning of 2013 the event center and restaurant Schwanenburg opened in a reconditioned brick building. The name is reminiscent of an old restaurant that was demolished in 1960 for the construction of the West Schnellweg.
