The house Stieg 16 (until 1878: Am Stieg 196) is a listed building east of the market in the city of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt . In its current form, it dates from the 17th century and is one of the very few Quedlinburg examples of a Greek-language inscription. In addition, an apotropaic interpretation of a contemporary inscription in Quedlinburg after the city fire of 1675 can be recognized from the inscription attached to the Pölle .
location
It is located east of the city's market square on the corner of Stieg and Pölle streets . The eaves side of the house faces the staircase, the eastern gable faces the pollen. Its prominent corner location gives the building great urban significance. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
Architecture and history
The construction rose 16
The three-storey half - timbered house on the corner of Pölle, cantilevered towards the staircase with both upper floors , is 14 compartments on the staircase and seven compartments on the Pölle. It was built in 1620 on a sandstone base . There was a brewing right on the parcel at this point . The facade is decorated with ship valleys, the beam heads are simply rounded. Carnie profiles are incorporated into the parapet and filler wood . On the threshold there is a humanistic inscription in Greek, Latin and German.
The client and builder was the Quedlinburg town clerk Christoph Nicolai . He then lived in the house with his wife Catharina and six children. The council carpenter Barthel Merten is accepted as the carpenter of the house . The initials BM refer to him .
In 1689, the town clerk's granddaughter had the southern wing added based on a building inscription. At the same time the house was renewed. It was given a marbling paintwork and a strongly cranked diamond door . Other information suggests that the door, which extends over two axes, was built in the 18th century. The door is to the left of the center. The main building was given a new color scheme in the course of the construction of the side wing. The hitherto gray and ocher-colored paint, which made the framework bars and struts largely unrecognizable, was replaced by a marbling color scheme for the fields. The half-timbered stands were painted light gray. The generously proportioned upper storeys could only be reached via an external staircase facing the courtyard. A passage to the courtyard is said to have only been possible via a courtyard gate of the neighboring staircase 17 . Both parts of the building have a full cellar, whereby the vaulted cellar of the main house is made of sandstone and the extension was made of bricks.
The facade was plastered in the 19th century. At the end of the 19th century, Mr. Baumgarten owned the house. He ran a restaurant on the ground floor. Also at the end of the 19th century, a shop was added to the ground floor. As early as 1888, a shop window was created in the 4th and 5th compartments of the southern extension , which is no longer available today. A shop door was built to the right of the shop window in 1925.
A Heinrich Storch ran a grocery store in the house in the 1950s. You could get into the shop from the staircase as well as from the Pölle . The building was plastered.
The marbling paint was retained until 1988 and was resumed in 1998 when it was renovated. On the bright red background of the plastered compartments there is a black and yellow veined marbling. A black contour line serves to set it apart from the bars, which were painted light gray according to the color findings. During the renovation, the originally present under the beam heads were Knaggen restored. Apartments were built in the house and a restaurant on the ground floor. Individual historical pieces of equipment have been preserved, such as a cross-frame window from the Baroque period , the floor tiles in the hallway and turned posts of the railing from the 19th century.
The southern wing
The southern wing of the house stretches along the street Pölle . It is seven compartments wide, eaves facing the Pölle and two floors high, also largely unchanged, and bears an inscription on its threshold. On the facade there is a half-timbered figure and foot struts . In addition, there are decorative brickwork in the compartments.

The three-part inscription is affixed to the sill beam on the first projecting floor (A) facing the staircase, on the sill beam on the gable (B) and on the sill beam of the neighboring house (C) facing the pölle.

The house was plastered until it was renovated in 1998.
Interior design
The half-timbered wall in the stairwell, which is numbered with joinery symbols , originally formed the rear exterior facade of the main house.
