John Stig Claesson (born June 2, 1928 in Huddinge near Stockholm , † January 4, 2008 in Stockholm) was a Swedish writer , visual artist and illustrator .

After Claesson had attended the Kungliga Konsthögskolan Stockholm between 1947 and 1952 , he began to illustrate Swedish classics, for example the historical accounts of Stockholm by Per Anders Fogelström . He signed his drawings with the abbreviation Slas .

He made his debut as an author in 1956. Several of his books are based on trips abroad and move in the borderland between reportage and fiction . One of his best-known works is the novel En vandring i solen (Walk into the Sun) from 1976, which is mainly based in Cyprus and which was filmed with Gösta Ekman in the lead role. He also made himself heard with works that describe remote regions of Sweden characterized by rural exodus and address the conflict between town and country, for example with the novel Vem älskar Yngve Frej (1968; Who loves Yngve, which has been translated into more than ten languages ​​and also filmed Frej). By 2006 Claesson had written more than 80 books and several scripts .

Stig Claesson's work has won several awards, such as the Svenska Dagbladet literary prize and the Selma Lagerlöf prize . The University of Uppsala awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1974 .
