Torsten Hägerstrand

Stig Torsten Erik Hägerstrand (born October 11, 1916 in Moheda , Alvesta municipality ; † May 3, 2004 in Lund ) was a Swedish human geographer at the University of Lund , who gained importance primarily through his research in the field of contemporary geography .

Life

After studying in Lund (including with Edgar Kant ), he wrote his doctoral thesis on waves of innovation in 1953 . This was translated into English by Allan Pred in 1967 under the title “Innovation Diffusion as a Spatial Process” . In 1969, on the occasion of his presidency of the Regional Science Association, he gave the address "What about people in regional science?" , Which was published the following year in the journal Papers of the Regional Science Association . In it, Hägerstrand defined regional science as a social science discipline.

He continued to conduct research in the area of ​​so-called "diffusion waves" and finally developed his four-stage model of innovation waves .
