features
The Storchschnabelliest reaches a height of 35 cm. It has a large red beak and a brownish head. The neck and the breast plumage are cream colored, the wing tops are colored blue-green.
Occurrence and habitat
The distribution area of the Storchschnabelliest extends from India to Indonesia and the Philippines .
Its habitat is on the wooded banks of inland waterways as well as on the sea.
Subspecies
At least 13 subspecies have been described, including:
- P. c. burmanica Sharpe , 1870 - occurs in Myanmar to the Isthmus of Kra .
- P. c. capensis ( Linnaeus , 1766) - occurs from Nepal via India to Sri Lanka .
- P. c. cyanopteryx ( Oberholser , 1909) - is widespread in Sumatra , Bangka , Belitung and Borneo .
- P. c. floresiana Sharpe , 1870 - is common in Bali , Lombok , Sumbawa and Flores .
- P. c. gigantea Walden , 1874 - is common on the Sulu Islands .
- P. c. gouldi Sharpe , 1870 - occurs in the northern Philippines .
- P. c. intermedia Hume , 1874 - is widespread on the Nicobar Islands .
- P. c. javana ( Boddaert , 1783) - occurs in Java .
- P. c. malaccensis Sharpe , 1870 - occurs on the Malay Peninsula , Riau Islands, and Lingga Islands .
- P. c. osmastoni ( Baker, ECS , 1934) - occurs in the Andaman Islands .
- P. c. simalurensis Richmond , 1903 - occurs on Simeuluë northwest of Sumatra.
- P. c. sodalis Richmond , 1903 - is common on the Banyak Islands northwest of Sumatra.
- P. c. innominata ( van Oort , 1910) - is widespread in Borneo.
