occupation

Storm Warning (distribution title: Storm Warning - survival can be fatal ) is an Australian horror film by Jamie Blanks from 2007. The "Uncut Edition" of the film was confiscated in Germany in 2008 nationwide .

action

Lawyer Rob and his French wife Pia go fishing by boat near French Island . When a storm approaches, they try to get back on land, but are hopelessly lost. On land they seek shelter in an abandoned house, which also serves as a marijuana plantation. Shortly afterwards, the two brothers Jimmy and Brett and their father Poppy return. Jimmy and Brett have fun tormenting and humiliating the couple. When Pia and Rob want to flee, they are caught by the two and held captive in a barn. Rob's leg is also broken. When their father wakes up, the couple realize that they will not survive the night.

Pia now takes the initiative. She succeeds in killing the members of the family with the help of two traps. Eventually she and Rob escape.

background

Screenwriter Everett De Roche , who was responsible for the thematically similar scripts for Long Weekend and Razorback , wrote the screenplay 30 years ago. It was particularly influenced by Sam Peckinpah's film Who sows violence . The Australian director Jamie Blanks ( Dark Legends ) then filmed the script in 2007, but omitted some scenes that he found too boring and some scenes were bloodier than in the original.

The film was shot in Melbourne within 24 days and had a budget of four million Australian dollars . The rain seen in the film was only added to the film in post-production because there was no rain falling in Australia at the time of filming.

Publication in Germany

Storm Warning had its cinema premiere on August 19, 2007 at the Fantasy Filmfest , where the not-yet-finished film was shown. A DVD release of the “Uncut Edition”, which is based on the US R-Rated version, followed on February 8, 2008. This is shortened by a few violent peaks compared to the uncut original version.

Despite the slight cuts made compared to the original version, the German DVD was indexed on July 31, 2008 by the Federal Inspectorate for Media Harmful to Young People and confiscated nationwide by the Munich District Court on December 10, 2008 for glorifying violence (Az. 855 Gs 596/08). The DVD is therefore subject to a distribution ban and may no longer be sold in Germany. The justification given by the judge was that the film “consists of a series of long-acting, sadistic behaviors”.

A version shortened by a further five minutes was also released on DVD; she received an age rating of 18 years and over from the FSK .

reception

The film received different ratings from the critics. Above all, it was criticized that the Backwoods horror film was shot at a time when thematically similar films with explicit scenes of violence such as Wrong Turn and Hostel had been released, so that the film would offer little new. The lexicon of international film therefore called the film an "extremely tough horror thriller that arranges the usual set pieces of the genre with unusual murderous tools."

“A couple on the run from criminals is a familiar scenario in the horror genre. Director Jamie Blankss makes the best of this. He creates a spiral of tension that works wonderfully except for minor dropouts. The cat-mouse game between perpetrator and victim is thought out down to the last detail. Due to the changing balance of power, it doesn't seem boring. While Robert Taylor is not convincing in his portrayal, Nadia Fares copes with the challenge of her role very well. Some ideas are reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino's orgies of violence. "
