Stratford-on-Avon is a district in the county of Warwickshire in England . The administrative seat is the similarly named city Stratford-upon-Avon . Other important places are Alcester , Aston Cantlow , Bidford-on-Avon , Bishop's Itchington , Harbury , Henley-in-Arden , Kineton , Long Itchington , Quinton , Shipston-on-Stour , Southam , Stockton , Studley , Wellesbourne , Weston-on -Avon and Wootton Wawen .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the Borough of Stratford-upon-Avon, the Rural Districts of Alcester, Shipston-on-Stour and Southam and most of the Rural District of Stratford-upon-Avon.
