history

Murphy's Haystacks

The first European to come to this bay was the Dutch explorer Pieter Nuyts when he sailed there with the 't Gulden Zeepaerdt in 1627 . A memorial was erected for him on Bay Road in the village. The explorer Matthew Flinders gave this place his name in 1802 and Edward John Eyre built his depot three kilometers from today's city center on the occasion of his expedition to Albany . The site of the depot, called Eyre's Waterhole, is now on Port Kenny Street. The place was called Flinders in 1872 and was not renamed Streaky Bay until 1940. From 1880 the sheep's wool trade and the associated shipments developed. Around 1906 a telegraph station was set up that made the connection to Port Lincoln.

Location and economy

The place is dominated by agriculture, crops and sheep breeding, but also by fishing and tourism. Fishing as a source of income has developed since the early 1900's, with the Australian fish, snapper and the King George Whiting, being preferred. Streaky Bay is characterized by a landscape of bushland, coastal cliffs and sea bays, but also by agriculture. The land is also inhabited by Aborigines . 30 kilometers from the village is the Calpatanna Waterhole Conservation Park , which is characterized by coastal landscapes and salt lakes . Noteworthy are Murphy's Haystacks, weathered and wind-cut pink granite rocks that are 1590 million years old. The long coastline of the peninsula leads numerous tourists in the summer to the area around Streaky Bay and the Nuyts Archipelago Conservation Park (an archipelago ), who visit the long and partly deserted beaches, which are made up of rocks and cliffs on the southern ocean Coasts and islands exist. Accommodation can be found in hotels, motels, caravan parks and campsites in the town.

The village has football, cricket, bowling clubs, a golf course and swimming pools, a hospital, a primary school and a public library. The place can be reached via the Flinders Highway by bus from Adelaide and by plane at Streaky Bay Airport, which is about 10 kilometers from the town and can be reached from Ceduna Airport or Port Lincoln Airport.
