The plant genus Streblus belongs to the mulberry family (Moraceae).
description
Appearance and leaves
Streblus species grow as shrubs or mostly trees . They contain milky juice and often smell. Some species have axillary spines.
The alternate and two lines arranged on the branches leaves are stalked short. The simple leaf blade is pinnate . Cystolites can be present on both leaf surfaces . The leaf margin is smooth or serrated. The two lateral to more or less stem-enclosing stipules are free or fused and fall off early.
Inflorescences and flowers
Streblus species are single- sexed ( monoecious ) or dioecious ( dioecious ). The male inflorescences are laterally on an inflorescence stem and are more or less head- shaped , racemose or spiked . Sometimes there is a single female flower in an inflorescence surrounded by many male flowers. Female flowers are mostly solitary in the leaf axils. In the male flowers, the mostly four (rarely three or five) sepals are free or at most fused at their base and the mostly four (rarely three or five) stamens are bent inward in the flower bud; the anthers are small, kidney-shaped and curved outwards. In the female flowers, the four sepals are free or fused, the upper continuous, thick at its base and fleshy ovary just to obliquely ovoid and the stylus pen has two branches.
Fruits and seeds
The stone fruits are not united in a fruit association , which distinguishes them from many other genera of this family. The free, spherical stone fruits open when ripe or remain closed and they can be covered by the somewhat enlarged, often fleshy calyx on one side. The relatively large, spherical seeds are covered by a membranous endocarp ; they can contain an endosperm and the embryo has two unequal germ layers ( cotyledons ).
Systematics and distribution
Streblus species are found in tropical and subtropical Asia, Australia (two species in Queensland and New South Wales), Africa and Madagascar (two species). There are seven types in China.
The genus Streblus was established in 1790 by João de Loureiro in Flora Cochinchinensis , Volume 2, pp. 599, 614-615, 754. Type species is Streblus asper Lour.
