Stromberg

The fortification on the Stromberg near Ripsdorf in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Euskirchen is a ring wall that may have been part of a Celtic refuge .

Geographical location

The Stromberg fortification is located in the northern Eifel in the area of the municipality of Blankenheim about 1.6 km northwest of Ripsdorf and 1.8 km (as the crow flies ) northeast of Waldorf . The Höhenburgalage is located on the Stromberg ( 559  m above sea  level ), one of the highest mountains near the upper Ahr valley , which is passed south in the area of the Blankenheimer hamlet Ahrmühle and at the Ripsdorfer Mühle from the Schaafbach . These heights are shown on topographic maps in the enclosure : 559  m and 558.2  m .

description

The almost circular rampart, about 215 meters wide in west-east direction and 240 m long in north-south direction, surrounds the Stromberg plateau, which slopes steeply on all sides . The ramparts, formed from sandstone and basalt blocks, were discovered in the course of the recording of soil monuments by the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in 1979, but have not yet been investigated in depth. According to Herzog, they were part of a prehistoric Celtic refuge.

Connected to this facility is an artificial hill about 145 m to the north with a surrounding ditch . According to its type and size, Herzog assigns the complex, which is approximately 55 m wide, to the medieval moths (tower hill castle). There are remains of former mining ( ore ) in the vicinity of both fortifications .
