Neuweiler Castle (North Rhine-Westphalia)
Neuweiler Castle

The castle Neuweiler stood in the Ahr valley about 250 meters below the castle Doll village in the municipality Blankenheim , Euskirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The complex, which is only mentioned sporadically in historical sources, dated Wackenroder in 1932 as dating from the time of the Merovingians . He justified this with the name ending in -weiler . However, the findings from 1998 documented by Wegener could not provide any confirmation of this. Rather, it is an early medieval castle that was first named in 1077. Further evidence than Nuwilre comes from the years 1168 and 1190, with the mention of an Ulrich von Neuweiler . Towards the end of the 12th century, the expansion of this valley system ended with the strength of the Lords of Dollendorf. Wegener does not rule out that there was another use as a defense tower to secure the trade route and the downstream Ahrhütte . The last mention dates from 1534.

description

The hill fort at 385  m above sea level. The ridge of the NHN is located at the confluence of the Ahr and the Lampertsbach flowing in from the right . The facility extends over a length of 120 m and a width of around 75 m. In the north-west and south-east there are two securing ditches that define the central castle hill of 75 m by 40 m, which is 26 m above the Ahr. In the course of the construction of the upper Ahr Valley Railway from Ahrdorf to Blankenheim-Wald , which opened in 1913 , the mountain spur was cut .

Current condition

According to the investigations from 1998, remains of foundations of various dimensions can still be found in several places, including a rectangular building measuring 15 m by 7.50 m. There were no signs of a larger castle tower , but six areas where buildings existed could be defined. For a bailey was no evidence found.
