List of train stations in Croatia |
The Karlovac train station ( Croatian : Željeznički kolodvor Karlovac ) is located in the Karlovac district of Banija . The operator of the station, which opened in 1863, is the Croatian Railways (HŽ).
history
Karlovac was one of the first train stations in Croatia after the Zagreb main train station . As early as the mid- 1840s there were plans by Croatian landowners to connect Karlovac with Zagreb and the trade routes of inland waterways via the Drava and Danube by a horse-drawn railway . In 1863 the first railway line Zagreb-Karlovac was completed and a first, wooden station building was erected in Karlovac. In 1870 the railway line was extended to include the Zagreb- Koprivnica line, thus establishing a connection to Budapest . In 1873 the connection from Karlovac to the seaport of Rijeka was completed; the first machine , en route to Fiume , passed the train station in Ogulin on September 6th of that year .
The present reception building of the Karlovac train station was built between 1902 and 1903. The simple structure, built in the style of historicism , consists of a nearly 200 m long single-storey railway structure, a two-storey central reception hall and two side end structures. In 1906 the connection to Sisak-Caprag was opened, in 1914 the long-distance connection of the Hungarian State Railways via Bubnjarci to the Austrian Weißkrain to Ljubljana .
After the First World War, the station was transferred to the Yugoslav Railways (JDŽ, later JŽ), and in 1991 to the Croatian Railways (HŽ).
