Studio for Electronic Music (Dresden)

The Studio for Electronic Music in Dresden is an institute of the University of Music Carl Maria von Weber Dresden and the Technical University of Dresden . In addition to the facilities in Berlin and Weimar, the Dresden studio is the only one of its kind in the new federal states and has contributed significantly to the development of new music in the GDR .

history

The music studio was founded in 1984 by Friedbert Wissmann as a studio for electronic sound generation at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden. The students were initially trained on keyboards . The use of Commodore 64 and Amiga followed . In the early 1990s, the computer-aided system Samplitude was developed here together with the TU Dresden . In 1993, Professor Wilfried Jentzsch took over responsibility for the facility. He introduced new systems like the Apple Macintosh and Pro Tools . Between 2006 and 2008 Michael Flade was acting head of the studio. Professor Franz Martin Olbrisch has been its director since September 2008 . Together with his colleague Jürgen Lange and the students, Olbrisch developed the room control project out of control . In 2010 the International Darmstadt Summer Courses invited the studio with this project for a fortnight. Olbrisch brought many guests to the Dresden studio, including Gilles Gobeil , Norbert Schnell ( IRCAM , Paris), Hans-Joachim Hespos and Daniel Teruggi ( Groupe de recherches musicales , Paris).

The studio's task is to teach electronic music as part of the composition course . In the master’s program there is the option of choosing a focus. The content of the subject is live electronics , algorithmic composition, radiophonic projects and sound installations.

In the studio, compositions for multi-channel band pieces, instruments with playback tape, live electronics and multimedia projects have been created by Karsten Gundermann , Vito Zuraj , Franz Schillinger , Benjamin Schweitzer , Jorge García del Valle Méndez , Hiromi Ishii , Wilfried Jentzsch, Alexander Keuk , Michael Flade , Johannes Motschmann , Theodor Schubach , Karoline Schulz , Martin Baumgärtel and Jakob Gille.

The institute is currently researching the area of ​​room control.
