Course of the Sudbury River (right source of the Concord River) |
The Sudbury River is the right-hand headwaters of the Concord River in the US state of Massachusetts .
geography
The Sudbury River has its source in a marshland in Westborough and flows from there in an easterly direction. After about 51 km it joins the Assabet River in Concord . Its catchment area extends over a total of 420 km 2 . In its course it first forms the border between the towns of Southborough and Hopkinton and then flows through the urban areas of Ashland and Framingham . After passing a few lakes, it continues to flow north through the towns of Wayland , Sudbury and Lincoln .
history
The river has always been important to the region. Before the colonization of North America, it was used by the North American natives as a waterway to the Atlantic coast . During the colonization of the region, dams were built to use the water to generate energy. In the early 19th century, the river was even temporarily diverted to supply Boston with drinking water. Today it is a popular destination for canoe trips .
On April 9, 1999, the lower 16 miles of the Sudbury River was designated a National Wild and Scenic River .
environment
Like other rivers in the area, the Sudbury River has suffered heavy industrial pollution. In the early 21st century, mercury pollution from a factory in Ashland made the EPA aware of the pollution. As a result, the river began to be cleaned. However, the consumption of fish from the river is still not recommended (as of 2008).
