Sukhothai (from Sanskrit Sukhodaya , "causing great well-being"; Thai : สุโขทัย , pronunciation: [sùʔkʰǒːtʰaj] ) is the capital of the Thai province of Sukhothai , which lies in the lower north of the country.

Sukhothai has the status of a "city commune" (officially เทศบาล เมือง สุโขทัย ธานี , Thesaban Mueang Sukhothai Thani ) and is located in the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Sukhothai . Today's city is 13 kilometers east of the historic city of Sukhothai, which was the capital of the kingdom of the same name from the 13th to the early 15th centuries , the first larger kingdom of the Thai in the Thai lowlands, and whose ruins are accessible to visitors as the Sukhothai Historical Park .

history

Founded in 1238 from an old Khmer settlement, Sukhothai became the capital of the eponymous kingdom of Sukhothai for the first time for 120 years .

Legend has it that Sukhothai was founded around AD 500, and one of its leaders was King Chao Aluna Khmara, also known as Phra Ruang .

The city center of Sukhothai was completely destroyed by a large fire in 1968, so all buildings in this area are from more recent times.

geography

Sukhothai is located about 440 kilometers north of the capital Bangkok in the catchment area of the Mae Nam Yom (Yom River) and in the middle of a hilly area that is used for rice cultivation . The city consists of two relatively separate districts: Old and New Sukhothai.

Attractions

The ruined city of Sukhothai Historical Park ( UNESCO - World Heritage Site ) is an important tourist attraction. The old city was surrounded by earth walls and moats measuring 1.8 km × 1.4 km. As early as 1942 there were plans to restore it as a historical park. The first work on the inventory did not begin until the early 1950s, the first restoration work began in 1964. The Ramkhamhaeng Museum was founded on January 25, 1964, where important finds could be exhibited. The final restoration was completed in 1988 when the Sukhothai Historical Park was inaugurated by King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). Inside and outside the old city walls, almost 200 temple ruins can be seen today, the oldest ruins dating from the 13th century.
