The company KK Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group ( Jap. 株式会社三井住友フィナンシャルグループ, Kabushiki Kaisha Mitsui Sumitomo Finansharu Gurūpu , Eng. Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. ) is a financial services company in Japan and the third largest bank in Japan. The company's headquarters are in Chiyoda , Tokyo . The company is part of the Sumitomo Group .

With a turnover of 49.1 billion US dollars and a profit of 7.2 billion US dollars, Sumitomo Mitsui ranks 59th among the world's largest companies according to Forbes Global 2000 (as of FY 2017). The company had a market capitalization of approximately USD 58 billion in mid-2018.

history

On April 1, 2001, Sakura Bank (founded in 1876) and Sumitomo Bank (1895) merged to form Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC). On December 2, 2002, SMBC founded the holding company Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG).

In 2005, Teisuke Kitayama became the company's president. In 2006 Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group employed 20,322 people.

In 2008, the SMFG supported the British Barclays Bank with a financial injection of billions.

The Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group is since November 2011 by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) as one of 30 "systemically important financial institutions" ( systemically important financial institutions classified). It is therefore subject to special monitoring and stricter requirements for the endowment with equity .

In 2017, total assets were $ 1.8 trillion.
