Superflex 2000 is a series of RoRo ferries with a special engine arrangement.

details

The ship was designed by Peter Zacchi, whose company PZ Trading also took over the marketing of the ships. Construction was carried out by North East Shipbuilders at their Pallion and Southwick shipyards, with the final unit of the Appledore Shipbuilders type being built in Appledore. In the beginning, the name always consisted of the word Superflex and consecutive letters in the radio alphabet ( Superflex Alpha , Superflex Bravo , Superflex Charlie etc.).

Originally the construction of 24 units of the type was planned, but only 15 were built. Even the first units delivered showed a variety of defects. The superstructures became sooty due to exhaust pipes that were too short, the fuel consumption of the ships quickly rose from 9 tons per day to 14 tons per day and the engine output was too low. Soon after handover, the ferries had to be overhauled so extensively that Peter Zacchi withdrew the order. Further units were built later, but some of them were in operation long before they were taken over by the shipping companies. After the bankruptcy of North East Shipbuilders and the takeover by Appledore Shipbuilders, they delivered one last ferry. The series can be divided into the two types Mark III and Mark IV , which differ in some structural details and also have slightly different transport capacities.

The special feature of the completely symmetrical double-ended ferries lies in the concept without a machine room. Instead of a conventional propulsion system, five Cummins diesel generators are set up on deck in silenced housings on each side of the ship . They supply the electricity for four Schottel rudder propellers .

The vehicles can be transported on two continuous decks. The main deck can be loaded via the two bow ramps in the fore and aft , the upper deck above is accessible via two side ramps arranged on the front and aft. The passenger and crew quarters as well as the wheelhouse are located in the elevated deckhouse in the middle , under which the passage to the upper deck is located.

The former Superflex Foxtrot occupies a special position . She was acquired by a Greek shipping company in 1994, first towed from Copenhagen to Piraeus and later to the Kynossoura shipyard. The ship's propulsion system was replaced by two MAN engines and two screws and the ship itself was converted from a double-ended ferry to a ferry that can be loaded and unloaded via a stern ramp . As a pantocrator of Feax Express Lines, the ship was operated on the route between Igoumenitsa and Corfu. In 2013 the ship was sold to Indonesia.

The former Superflex Delta was scrapped as Gitte 3 in early 2010 as the first ship in the series.
