Supraśl is a town with about 4700 inhabitants and the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with about 14,800 inhabitants in north-eastern Poland .

Geographical location

Supraśl is located near the Belarusian border - about 15 kilometers northeast of Białystok . It has belonged to the Podlaskie Voivodeship in the Białostocki powiat since 1999 and is the seat of Gmina Supraśl . Before that, Supraśl was part of the Białystok Voivodeship .

Attractions

The Monastery of the Annunciation (also: Supraskaja Lavra ) is located in Supraśl - an Orthodox monastery, which was in the meantime a Basilian monastery and is now one of a total of six male monasteries of the Polish Orthodox Church . The monastery courtyard is framed by baroque buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The center of the monastery courtyard is the Cerkiew Zwiastowania Najświętszej Marii Panny monastery church ( Church of the Annunciation ). It was built in the Renaissance style in the 16th century , was completely destroyed in the Second World War, was rebuilt true to the original between 1998 and 2004, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in Poland. Today there is a museum in the former palace of the Archimandrites, which houses one of the most important collections of icons in Poland. The important Homiliar Codex Suprasliensis , one of the oldest Slavic writings in Poland and one of the oldest of its kind in the world, was named after the Supraskaya Lavra monastery . Since 20 September 2007, he is part of the World Documentary Heritage of UNESCO . In the Orthodox world, the monastery is also famous for the Irmologion Supraski , written in the monastery by the secular Bogdan Onisimowicz , a 700-page liturgical book written between 1598 and 1601, which contains chants from Constantinople, from Holy Mount Athos and from Kiev The cave monastery is one of a kind in the history of Slavic Orthodox church chant. The Irmologion Supraski was only rediscovered in Kiev in 1970 and is now recognized as one of the most important music manuscripts in the world.

In addition, there is a former Protestant church with a cemetery and the palace of the Buchholtz family, which was rebuilt in 1903 in the neo-renaissance style.

The 4000 year old burial mound of Supraśl was excavated in 2014.
