UMTS modem

Mobile internet via USB UMTS stick

A UMTS modem (also UMTS data card colloquially) Surfstick called, is a peripheral device that using a SIM card , a connection between a computer and the Internet service provider using the UMTS produces -Mobilfunknetzes and thus a mobile use of the Internet allows.

General

Some devices (notebooks, but also vehicles that need to reload data while driving) have an internal UMTS modem. External UMTS modems are available as USB sticks (“UMTS stick”), PCMCIA cards (PC cards), Express cards and SD cards . The speed depends on the network availability and is usually up to 384 kbit / s , which corresponds to six times the ISDN speed. The UMTS modems are - like all cell phones for the third generation (3G) cellular network - so-called dual-mode devices. If the UMTS reception is too weak, cell phones and PC card radio modems switch to GSM automatically and without interruption . Newer modems transmit data with the help of HSDPA with 1.8 to 7.2 Mbit / s. There are now LTE modems that can transmit via LTE at speeds of up to 100 Mbit / s. Higher speeds are not yet possible, the first 5G technologies have been installed since 2020.

Models

UMTS modems are currently available from the following manufacturers, among others: Option NV , based in Belgium , supplied Vodafone with the first UMTS modem. The US company Novatel Wireless Inc. from San Diego in California supplied the first UMTS modems for T-Mobile and O₂ . The Chinese company Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and the Canadian mobile phone specialist Sierra Wireless are also represented with their UMTS modems by German mobile phone providers. BandRich from Taiwan only offers its card on the open market. There is also Onda Communication from Italy and ZTE from China.

Many mobile communications companies sell UMTS modems from these manufacturers under their own names, for example Vodafone , A1 Telekom Austria , O₂ , Telekom Deutschland , One , Drei , Sunrise Communications , Swisscom , Orange and Mobilcom-Debitel . This makes product and price comparisons difficult for consumers. One advantage of this relabelling results for the mobile phone companies: By changing the product name of the card, the proximity to the product name of the associated data plan is created. Mixed calculations are easier to market in this way. In contrast to cell phones, this type of bundling (hardware and tariff or cellular network ) is less often secured by a Netlock , but is often secured by the network operator -specific application software supplied. For use in other cellular networks, the buyer is instructed to forego the supplied software and to integrate the card with on-board resources of the operating system or to use alternative, network operator-independent software, for example the open source software UMTSmon ( Linux ) or the freeware MWconn ( Ubuntu and Windows ).
