Surgeon Simulator (also known as Surgeon Simulator 2013 ) is a simulation game released in 2013 in which you take on the role of a surgeon . Characteristic here is the control, in which you have to control the individual hand movements of the person, which often leads to accidents and strange or absurd situations.

action

The protagonist of the game is a surgeon named Nigel Burke who has a job in a fictional hospital somewhere in the UK . He performs various operations , first on a patient who is affectionately known by the game developers as "Bob" and later also operates on Bob in a space station that orbits the earth. Then he is contacted by an alien race via VHS tape and operates on one of the aliens and receives the title "Best Surgeon in the Universe".

Gameplay

The simulator is played in first person view . Mouse movement is used to control the movement of the character's hand . By holding the right mouse button and moving the mouse, the player can turn the hand. The hand is lowered with the left mouse button. By default, the A, W, E, R keys and the space bar are used to control each finger.

The aim of the game is for the player to attempt various surgical procedures, for example a heart transplant . After completing the initial operations, several additional modes are available, such as: For example, performing an operation in an ambulance , where surgical instruments bounce around randomly, and operating in space , where weightlessness allows all instruments to float freely.

Development and publication

development

The game is developed and marketed by Bossa Studios . The four first developers were Tom Jackson, Jack Good, Luke Williams and James. The original version was created between January 25 and 27, 2013 in just 48 hours on a global game jam . As a game engine is Unity used. The developers weren't sure if they found the game so amusing because it was really funny or because it was just a result of sleep deprivation .

publication

The full version of the game was released on Steam on April 19, 2013 and on GOG.com on October 10. A version for iOS was also released on March 7, 2014 . A version for the PlayStation 4 followed on August 12, 2014 and one for Android on August 14, 2014. In October 2015, special versions for virtual reality glasses such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift were announced and implemented later.

Extensions

Three free downloadable items of content ( DLC ) and one paid DLC were added after its release. The first was released on June 21, 2013 and involves an operation where the player performs an operation on the Team Fortress 2 character "Heavy". The second was released on September 9, 2013 and includes an operation that involves operating on an alien. The third was released on June 2, 2016, titled "Inside Donald Trump," which will perform a heart transplant on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump . On August 14, 2014, an Anniversary A&E Edition was released on Steam. It added the eye and tooth transplants from the iOS version along with a few other features.

The reviews were mixed, but were rather positive. The funny moments created by the strange controls were often praised. This is how the game shines u. a. after rock, paper, shotgun not through its brilliance, but through the absurd , black and satirical humor. Among other things, the game's lack of long-term motivation is criticized . The game also gained great fame through Let's Plays and other web video formats on YouTube .

Because of the strange controls, the game is often compared to the game QWOP , in which you have similar controls on a sprinter. As of February 4, 2015, the game had sold over 2 million times.
