history

The Susanne Godeffroy was built at the Meyer shipyard in Lübeck and was launched in 1863. The owner was the trading house Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn under the management of the Hamburg businessman Johan Cesar Godeffroy . The ship was named after a member of the Godeffroy family .

The sailing ship was used to transport emigrants from Hamburg to Australia and served the import-export business of Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Son in the South Pacific. The natural scientist Amalie Dietrich returned to Germany on board the ship in 1873 from her stay in Australia.

After long lay times near Samoa and Sydney , the sailing ship was sold at auction on June 17, 1880. The new owners were Robey Bros. and Captain R. Edmondson. The ship was repaired and in September 1880 an appraisal certified her seaworthiness. On a trip from Newcastle to Yokohama , the Susanne Godeffroy got into stormy weather on September 28, 1880 and sank. The captain and several crew members were killed.
